Ensign Gimmel: Boss, we’ve launched the telescope probe.

Captain Uwohali sat on the edge of his mud bath and scraped off the last of the scales from his feet, and tosses an empty bottle of oil at the intercom button, "How long until everything is in position?"

Ensign Gimmel: We’re 700 AU out from the neutron star. Just under T minus 12 minutes until we are in position of the dual focal point of the grav-lensing of the two stars. We will be in perfect alignment so we can use the gravitational lensing to magnify the signal and the maximum screening out of distortions.

Captain Uwohali hosed off is feet and admiring his exfoliation, nodding as if anyone could see, "Are the shield mods ready?"

Ensign Gimmel: The last of the extra-vehicular work to mod the shields to act as an additional lens and the antenna mods are being finished up as we speak. We have enough time.

Captain Uwohali We only get one shot at this, I don’t know if astrometrics can find another stellar alignment to exploit a dual gravitational lensing that is directly on line with the Sigma Tama System. We will see if the Khwairif’s idea about it working with subspace is viable.

Ensign Gimmel: Everyone is assembled and ready, Chief.

Captain Uwohali pulled on his jumpsuit and trotted to the lift to take him to the command and control centre.

Captain Uwohali paced past the captain’s seat to the engineering station and pushed away the acting officer.

Captain Uwohali nodded, "Nav."

Lieutenant Sciame: "We are easing into position, T minus 30 seconds, Boss."

Captain Uwohali called out the operation, "Activate Shield Lensing."

Lieutenant Sciame: "Long Range Sensors at maximum sensitivity, Boss."

Ensign Gimmel: "Probe Telescope uncovering mirror. Right on time."

Captain Uwohali called out, "How long until the signal?"

Lieutenant Sciame: "Ten seconds until alignment, Boss, we’re on target and on time."

Ensign Gimmel: "10, 9, 8, 7, 6, 5, 4, 3, 2, Enjoy the moment, one. Go."

Captain Uwohali "Comms, get a filter on that, get rid of the static and distortion"

Ensign Gimmel:"Damned Nebula. On it, Boss."

Captain Uwohali: "Excuses are unbecoming."

Lieutenant Sciame holds his breath.

Ensign Gimmel:"We’ll all have to wait. It won’t be in alignment again for another 42 years. By then it will be in syndication and we can download the entire season."

Lieutenant Sciame: "Binge that. How long until 'Seven Rules for Dating my Klingon Daughter’ comes on? I love that one."

Captain Uwohali turns to the Kumari, "Proof of concept, Kumari, tell the Yiaziis we are ready to try a hot run."

Mirra Zanzibar: "I shall. Thank you, Great Eagle."

Captain Uwohali: Great Eagle is the name of the ship.

Mirra Zanzibar: "Thank you, NavArch Uwohali.”

  The thought that first comes to people’s minds when they imagine a desert planet is hot. Most of Araxes is actually quite chilly. More so because of the thinner atmosphere in general and the altitude especially in the south.   Solar Radiation levels on Araxes is about 10 times terrestrial standard, about 3% of the amount in interplanetary space. This can be shielded against with some reasonable precautions. Most Araxes out of door gathering are at dusk and dawn for precisely this reason. Araxes however is susceptible to solar storms and solar flares dramatically increasing the already very high solar radiation levels.
